Argentina: Exports of seafood products fall 2% at the beginning of 2023

Argentina exports of seafood products increased by 10% in volume in January 2023, but fell by 2% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

In total, the South American country exported some 23,468 metric tons of seafood worldwide worth $103 million during the month, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

The data shows that the fall in the total value of exports in the month was due to a significant year-on-year drop in the average sales prices of squid and shrimp in this period. However, exported volumes increased for all major species.

In January, the sector exported 8,920 tons of red shrimp, worth 61.5 million dollars, 3% more in volume, but 1% less in value. The average export value of the product followed the same trend as that of squid, and in January fell 3% year-on-year, to $6.90/kg, or $6,898/t.

By markets, Argentine exports of seafood to Spain, which represented 12% of total Argentine exports in January, ranked first with some 2,915 tons worth 15.1 million dollars, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 24% and 29%, respectively.

The data below shows that exports to China and the United States, which ranked second and third respectively, followed the opposite trend and increased compared to the January 2022 figures.

Total exports to China amounted to 2,379 tons worth 13.9 million dollars, representing an increase of 62% and 43% respectively, while exports to the US amounted to 2,144 tons worth 17.5 million dollars. dollars, also 6% more in volume, but 15% less in value.

Lastly, exports to Brazil and Russia, which ranked fourth and fifth, followed different trends.

Exports to Brazil increased 11% in volume and 16% in value, up to 1,753 tons worth 5.8 million dollars, while exports to Russia fell 14% in volume, but increased 36% in value, up 1,462 tons worth 6.1 million dollars.
